More Americans Receiving COVID-19 Booster Would Save Over 75,000 Lives This Fall and Winter
Studies have demonstrated that protection from the original COVID-19 vaccines wanes over time. Yet only half of Americans have gotten at least one booster vaccine. A new analysis estimated that if the number of people receiving COVID-19 boosters this fall matched the uptake of 2020-21 flu vaccines, the US would avert 745,000 hospitalizations and 75,000 deaths this winter. The researchers also projected that if even more people received a booster dose (80% of eligible Americans), the country would prevent 90,000 deaths and over 936,000 hospitalizations. A successful booster campaign would also save at least $44 billion in healthcare costs by April 2023.
