The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is taking steps to better understand and address Long-COVID. HHS announced will establish the Office of Long-COVID Research and Practice to understand why some people experience persistent symptoms many weeks or months after their COVID-19 infection.
HHS also issued a guidance making clear that long-COVID is a disability under the Americans with Disability Act, the country’s landmark law protecting people with disabilities from discrimination. The guidance explained long-COVID symptoms can be continuous from the period of infection, go away and come back again or manifest as completely new symptoms. Anyone who has has COVID-19 can suffer from long-COVID, even if the initial disease was not severe.
