FDA Greenlights New Saliva-Based Test for COVID-19 for Emergency Use
The US Food and Drug Administration granted emergency use authorization to a new saliva test for COVID-19. The new diagnostic tool was created by Yale scientists in partnership with the NBA and NBA Players Association. The test, named SalivaDirect by the research team, offers comparable reliability to existing saliva testing methods. Experts say that this new technology presents an opportunity to increase the availability of tests because its lower costs and less invasive nature. SalivaDirect also lowers the infection risk to healthcare personnel since it uses a small, easy to obtain saliva sample.
