First Mpox Vaccines Arrive in Africa as Outbreaks Continue

As the Mpox virus surges in Central Africa, the first vaccine shipments have arrived. The US and European Union committed about 380,000 doses to the region in response to the outbreaks. However, global health experts emphasize that this commitment falls short of the 3 million doses necessary to help control the virus’s spread.

Most of the infections have occurred in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), which has now reported over 20,000 cases. In August, the World Health Organization declared a global health emergency, and since then, the outbreaks have only worsened. Guinea recently became the 14th country to confirm an mpox case. More than 21,300 people have fallen ill from the virus and 590 people have died across the 14 countries.
