The CDC issued a notice about the increasing risk of infection from the dengue virus. Puerto Rico declared a public health emergency in March 2024 due to dengue outbreaks, and this emergency is still in effect. Cases are up 113% over this same time in 2024. Infections also continue to spread in the US Virgin Islands, which had a public health emergency declared in August of 2024. The US Virgin Islands has reported 30 locally acquired infections in 2025. The Americas as a region has experienced record high levels of the virus in the last few years. Globally the virus has been surging the last 5 years as well. As a result the US has recorded a record number of dengue cases linked to travel abroad. In 2024 travel-related cases rose by 84% over previous year. In addition 3 states confirmed locally acquired dengue infections (not related to travel) in 2024. Studies show that climate change could continue to increase cases in the US and around the world.
