Widespread Testing, Contact Tracing Required For Country to Reopen
Public health experts are warning that reopening the country without widespread testing and contact tracing will spark more outbreaks. Given the massive number of contact tracers this program would require to be successful, states need federal aid. The United States does not currently have enough public health workers to employ this strategy on a large scale, so thousands non-health workers will have to be recruited. San Francisco has been training medical students, librarians and employees of the city attorney’s office and governments are considering calling upon public health students, Peace Corps volunteers and furloughed social workers to serve as tracers.
