Structural Inequities are Causing Black Americans to Suffer the Most from COVID-19 

COVID-19 is exacerbating social and economic inequities that have long existed in communities of color. Black Americans are less likely to have access to quality healthcare and more likely to have a job that cannot be done from home. People in this population also have higher rate of chronic diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes, which can lead to more severe complications in infected individuals. Black patients visiting clinics who show symptoms of COVID-19 are referred for testing less often than other races. These disparities make it harder to combat the virus not only in communities of color but for all Americans.
