Cucumbers contaminated with salmonella bacteria have caused at least 162 people to become ill. In 54 of these cases, the infected individuals needed to be hospitalized. The tainted cucumbers, sold by Fresh Start Produce, were shipped to distribution centers and wholesale distributors in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and 12 other states. The products, which have since been recalled, were shipped between May 17 and May 21. The products may have been redistributed and sold in additional states. English cucumbers and Mini cucumbers were not recalled. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said the “recalled cucumbers should no longer be in stores”.
Salmonella is one of the top causes of food poisoning. Symptoms can start between several hours and several days after ingestion. The bacteria can cause diarrhea, stomach cramps, vomiting and fever. Most people recover on their own, but if anyone experiencing severe or persistent symptoms, or dehydration, should seek medical attention. Young children, older adults and immunocompromised individuals face a higher risk of suffering severe complications from a salmonella infection.
