Governor Hochul Declares a Disaster Emergency to Bolster Polio Vaccination Efforts
New York has declared a disaster emergency after polio was found in several more wastewater samples taken throughout the state. The presence of virus in wastewater could indicate that the virus has begun to spread in the community. On July 1 health officials reported the first US case of polio in almost a decade. Up-to-date vaccinations virtually ensures complete immunity, but many people are not fully vaccinated. The emergency declaration directs medics, midwives and pharmacists to administer polio vaccinations and and calls on healthcare providers to share up-to-date immunization data with the state.
