Monkeypox May Have Been Spreading Undetected for Several Years, According to New Study
New evidence suggests that Monkeypox may have been circulating, undetected, in Western countries since 2018. The study, published in the International Journal of Infectious Diseases, indicates that the virus may have evolved to spread more easily from person to person. Dr. Sagan Friant warns, “the longer it takes to contain the virus, the higher the odds that it will find a permanent new home in people or animals”. As of Wednesday June 22, 3,400 confirmed cases and 3,500 suspected cases have been reported, which is a threefold increase from two weeks ago.
