Researchers Find No Association Between COVID-19 and Guillain-Barré Syndrome

A major study in the UK showed no connection between COVID-19 and Guillain Barré syndrome (GBS). Some health experts had concerns that the virus could potentially cause GBS because other infections have been known to trigger it. The country’s rate of new cases between March and May 2020 decreased from the same period in previous years. Researchers propose this phenomenon may be due to lockdown measures curbing the transmission of GBS-inducing viruses. Multiple small international studies however have indicated a possible link between association between COVID-19 and elevated risk of GBS. More research is necessary to draw more definitive conclusions.
