US At Risk of Losing WHO Measles Eliminaton Status
After a decades-long public health campaign, the United States officially eliminated measles in 2000. Next month, the US could lose its WHO measles elimination status after 3 straight years of declining vaccination rates. As of 2017-2018, the country has fallen below the threshold for herd immunity: 95 percent. Because vaccination rates among kindergartners dropped below this threshold, infants and other people who cannot receive the vaccine are at greater risk of contracting measles.
