Study Finds Myocarditis in Some College Athletes Who Contracted COVID-19
A study conducted at Ohio State University discovered that some student athletes who contracted COVID-19 experienced myocarditis: inflammation of the heart muscle. The study examined the hearts of 26 athletes recuperating from infection, none of whom suffered severe symptoms. The researchers used cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) to find inflamed muscle tissue. The scans revealed inflammation in 4 students, representing 15% of participants. The researcher’s caution that the study’s small sample size as well as its lack of pre-infection images and a control group make it difficult to generalize the result. They say the findings warrant a larger, controlled study.
