BA.5 Omicron Variant, Now the Predominant COVID-19 Strain, Poses New Threat Level
The BA.5 omicron variant continues to spread rapidly throughout the US. The latest data shows this variant accounts for 78% of all cases in the United States. This strain of COVID-19 is especially good at infecting people despite vaccination or prior infection. Immune protection from vaccination and previous infection still exists, but it is not quite as effective against this variant. Health officials advise Americans 50 years and older to receive a booster shot, stressing that this dose will not prevent you from receiving an updated Omicron-specific booster in the future.
