As Vaccination Rates Drop, Measles May Again Become a Major Public Health Threat
New data released by the CDC shows that 2019 is already the worst year for measles since 1992. The spread of anti-vaccine information, particularly online, has fueled the resurgence of the disease, which was eliminated as a major public health threat in 2000. Prior to the vaccine becoming common in the United States, 3-4 million people contracted measles and nearly 50,000 people were hospitalized every year.
