More Dangerous COVID-19 Variants Spread Across Florida Following Spring Break
Florida is reporting a surge in cases of three COVID-19 strains (variants) known to be more dangerous than the original COVID-19 virus because they are more contagious and/or cause more severe illness. The number of reported cases of just these three variants alone has soared over the past 7-8 weeks, following a trajectory health officials say matches up with the influx of vacationers over spring break. As of March 14, less than 800 cases of the variants had been reported. The state government has now reported over 10,000 cases of these variants. Public health experts point out that this number is likely an undercount of the true number of variant cases since only 1% of all COVID-19 cases in Florida are tested to identify the virus strain.
