Measles Outbreak Causes NYC Mayor to Declare Health Emergency

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has declared a public health emergency in Brooklyn as the months long measles outbreak continues to hospitalize people in the borough. Many of the cases have been clustered in the largely Jewish Orthodox community of Williamsburg, where resistance to vaccines is particularly high. As a result, the Mayor has mandated measles vaccinations in the area to stem the growth of the emergency. Since last October, 285 cases have been reported.
