Dangerous Infection in Deer, Elk Could Lead to Mad Cow-like Outbreak, Research Shows
The latest data shows that Chronic Wasting Disease has infected Deer, Elk and Moose in 24 states. The illness, sometimes referred to as “zombie” deer disease, has the potential to create a public health crisis similar to the UK’s Mad Cow Disease outbreak in the 1990s. Although CWD has not yet been reported in humans, research shows that it is able to be transmitted to primates and other animals.
