FDA Authorizes Updated Vaccine for Children 6 Months to 5 Years Old

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized Moderna and Pfizer’s updated COVID-19 vaccines for children between 6 months and 5 years old. The vaccines were already authorized for everyone 5 years and older. After reviewing the data on its safety and effectiveness, the FDA authorized Moderna’s bivalent shot as a booster in this age group. Children must wait two months after their initial round of vaccinations is completed. However, kids who completed their primary round of vaccinations Pfizer’s 3-dose regimen are not yet allowed to get the bivalent booster. The FDA anticipates it will receive the data on using Pfizer’s shot as booster for this age range in January.
