COVID-19 Infections Rising Among Older Americans

Infectious disease experts anticipate a post-holiday surge of respiratory infections. COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations are trending upward throughout the US, especially among seniors. Since October, older Americans have been hospitalized at four times the rate of the general population. Although new flu cases are dropping in most states, flu activity remains high, and may not have peaked for the season. The week following Thanksgiving accounted for over 1/3 of the season’s flu hospitalizations and deaths. COVID-19 cases in the US rose by 58% and deaths increased by 65% following the holiday. To date the CDC has confirmed more than 190,000 hospitalizations and 12,000 deaths from flu.
