Survey Finds Most Americans Need More Education on Safe Antibiotic Use

Despite the fact that a vast majority of older Americans are troubled by the overuse of antibiotics, many would expect to be prescribed one for illnesses that don’t require or don’t respond to this treatment. More than half of older adults have also used leftover antibiotics without consulting a healthcare professional, a potentially dangerous decision, warns Dr. Preeti Malani, chief health officer at the University of Michigan and specialist in infectious diseases, “including drug interactions, side effects, as well as resistance”.
