A new study reveals how long COVID causes prolonged symptoms months to years after a severe initial COVID infection. The major study conducted in the United Kingdom analyzed the blood of individuals who were hospitalized for COVID-19, finding that patients with persistent symptoms had blood markers for continued immune system activation long after the infection had cleared.

Compared to the control group of patients hospitalized for COVID-19 but did not experience ongoing symptoms post-infection, people with long COVID showed clear signs of inflammation and immune system activation. These results indicate that existing drugs which alter the body’s immune system could help to treat long COVID. The lead investigators of this study said that the promise of these medicines should be examined by in future research.
