Scientists warn that this highly mutated strain may allow the virus to overcome the immune system’s defenses. Researchers are currently studying BA.2.86 to determine how well the updated booster vaccine protects people against this emerging variant. The updated vaccines, which will be available this Fall, are expects to lower the risk of severe illness and hospitalizations.
