HPV Infections May Cause Infertility in Men, New Study Finds

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is best known for its association with cervical cancer. Yet, the virus can cause a variety of cancers in women and men. A new study found that men may have another reason to avoid HPV: lower fertility. The researchers discovered that sperm in men with high-risk forms of HPV suffered damage and was significantly more likely to die than sperm from men without the virus.

Health officials recommend HPV vaccines for all kids age 9 to 14 because the vaccination work best when given before people become sexually active. HPV vaccination rates for boys have historically been lower than for girls. Closing this gender gap could help prevent avoidable health problems in men.
