Deaths caused by cholera increase by 71% between 2022-2023. Last year over 4,000 people died from cholera. Total cholera cases rose by 13%, as 667,000 people suffered cholera infections. Cholera can is a disease caused by ingestion of water or food contaminated with Vibrio cholerae bacteria The illness can lead to severe dehydration, diarrhea and death. While cholera is very rare is wealthier countries, it is continues to impact millions of people in lower-income countries which are more likely to have poor sanitation.
Several key factors have contributed to the larger burden of cholera worldwide: the spread of conflict, worsening climate change, and unsafe water and sewage management.
