California health officials reported a suspected Avian Flu (bird flu) case in a child experiencing mild upper respiratory symptoms. Most notably, patient had no known exposure with an infected animal. The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) continues to investigate how the child was infected. If the CDPH confirm the child had no contact with an infected animal, it would be the second bird flu infection from an unknown source in North America. Last week an otherwise healthy teenager in Canada suffered a severe Avian Flu illness and was hospitalized in critical condition. The case in California would also be the second Avian Flu case not connected directly to any sick animals. The first such case was an individual in Missouri who tested positive while hospitalized.
