Boar’s Head has recalled 7 million additional pounds of meat products that may contain listeria bacteria. The company initially recalled over 200,000 pounds of meat as USDA investigations identified Boar’s Head products as the cause of hospitalizations and deaths across the country. To date, health officials have confirmed 34 hospitalizations and 2 deaths in the ongoing outbreak.
The new recall includes 71 products distributed between May 10 and July 29 and labeled under Boar’s Head or Old Country brands. The recalled products include a variety of packaged items sold in retail food stores as well as meat to be sliced in delis.
Symptoms of listeria infections often include fever, body aches, headaches, fatigue, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions. Intestinal symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea can also occur. People who are age 65 or older, pregnant, or immuno-compromised are particularly vulnerable to listeria infections.
