Health Officials Warn Novel Coronavirus Outbreaks in US are Likely
Health officials are warning that outbreaks in the US are very likely to occur in the near future. Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the National center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said that “it’s not so much of a question of if this will happen anymore but rather more of a question of exactly when this will happen”. Dr. Messonnier says that communities should be prepared to implement strategies such as breaking up school classes into smaller groups, canceling school days or meetings, and expanding the use of telecommuting. The World Health Organization reported earlier this week that the rate of new infections in China had that the pace of confirmed new cases in China has slowed considerably, from 2,000 cases a day last month to 508 cases per day on Monday. New hot spots in Italy, South Korea and Iran, however, have raised concern over the persistent global threat of the virus.
