Hepatitis A Outbreaks Spreading Across New Jersey

An outbreak of hepatitis A has caused more than 500 New Jerseyans to fall ill and killed 6 others over the last few months. Health officials are warning residents in the state about the heightened risk of contracting the disease for which there is no treatment. Dr. Edward Lifschitz, medical director of the New Jersey Health Department’s communicable disease service, says that “because we can’t treat it, we try so hard to prevent it in the first place”.  About 25 percent of all cases in New Jersey have occurred in Camden County. Drug users, gay men and people who have recently been in prison are 3 groups at higher risk of infection.
