Unvaccinated Adults Jumpstarted NY Measles Outbreak Among Schoolchildren

New data presented at the IDWeek conference showed that more than half of the measles cases early in the New York outbreak that infected hundreds of children were transmitted by adults. Eighty-two percent of these infected adults were either unvaccinated or uncertain of their vaccination history. The considerable impact of adults in precipitating the outbreak underscores the importance of getting an MMR vaccine. The CDC recommends that everyone over the age of 6 months get vaccinated.
