Measles Infections on the Rise Following Upward Trend in Non-Medical Vaccinations

Following a nationwide trend, the Greater Houston area has seen a flurry of measles cases over the past 2 weeks due to declining vaccination rates. As a result public health experts are seeking to abolish a law that allows parents to opt their child out of vaccinations for “reasons of conscience”, an exemption that was introduced in 2003. Since that time, the number of schoolchildren not vaccinated for non-medical reasons in the state has increased from 2,300 to almost 57,000 as of last year.
