As governments and private firms gear up to land humans on Mars, they are taking measures to evaluate the risks to human and Martian life. Experts warn that, just like with any type of exploration, microbes will likely be exchanged between humans that land on the planet and any indigenous bacteria and viruses. Scientists are working to create state-of-the-art biocontainment facilities to study the dangers of alien bacteria brought back to Earth and to minimize contaminating samples with terrestrial bacteria.
