More than 1 in 5 People Younger Than 50 are Infected with Herpes
Globally, over 1 in 5 adults younger than 50 years old have genital herpes. Specifically, 13% of people in this age range live with herpes simplex 2. Herpes simplex 2 is a sexually transmitted infection that lasts a lifetime. The virus can cycle between dormant and active periods in which a person experiences ulcers or sores on the skin. There is currently no cure, but some treatments to manage the disease do exist. The analysis, published in Sexually Transmitted Infections, found that 846 million individuals worldwide live with a genital herpes infection. Over 200 million people between the ages of 15-49 suffered from sores and ulcers due to herpes in 2020.

Self-Testing for HPV is Effective Alternative to Pelvic Exams, Study Shows
According to a new study, self-testing for HPV is an effective option for woman who prefer to collect their own samples rather than receiving a full pelvic exam. Self-testing for the virus helps patients know if they face a higher risk for cervical cancer. These findings were published about one week following a decision from the USPSTF panel of experts to recommend that people age 30 and older should be allowed to collect their own vaginal samples for cervical cancer screening. The decision from the USPSTF panel followed the FDA’s authorization of a self-testing kit for cervical cancer.
