Hurricanes Helene and Milton devastated many communities in Florida, causing power outages, lack of basic supplies like food and water, injuries and deaths. One of the ongoing impacts that has not gotten as much attention is rise of infectious diseases driven by remaining floodwater. Florida is experiencing a spike in life-threatening infections caused by Vibrio, a bacteria sometimes found in contaminated water.
Vibrio can lead to what’s known as necrotizing fasciitis: a severe infection that causes the flesh surrounding an open wound to die. This is why you should avoid exposure to floodwater whenever possible. If it is necessary to come into contact with floodwater, make sure to cover open wounds with a waterproof bandage and thoroughly clean the wound afterward.
