Avian Flu Outbreak in Missouri Grows to 8, Raising Concerns about Human-to-Human Transmission

Six healthcare workers who were exposed to the Missouri patient hospitalized with Avian Flu are now experiencing symptoms. The CDC continues its investigation into how the patient became infected. In contrast to other Avian Flu infections this year, the patient reported no contact with livestock or consumption of unpasteurized dairy products, which have been the two main pathways to infection in previous US cases. If laboratory tests come back positive, these would be the first confirmed cases of human to human transmission of the virus in the US.

It’s a pivotal moment in the evolution of Avian flu that experts have been warning about for decades. If the virus develops the ability to spread easily between people, it could trigger a pandemic.
