The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced its multi-pronged effort to halt the mpox outbreaks that continue to hit The Democratic Republic of Congo and nearby countries. The WHO recently declared a global health emergency due to the mpox virus’ rapid spread in the region. The plan to combat the virus includes measures to monitor, prevent and respond to the outbreaks. According to the newly released strategy, countries will need to coordinate resources to help boost staffing in affected countries and distribute millions of vaccines. Specifically at least 3 million vaccines are needed to make progress, but more doses will be required to end the outbreaks. The WHO estimates that these programs will require at least $135 million.
“This outbreak has been smoldering for quite a long time, and we continually have missed opportunities to shut it down”, said Dr. Nicole Lurie, Executive Director for preparedness and response at the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations. “I’m really glad that everybody is now paying attention and focusing their efforts on this”.
