A new study showed that middle-aged men living with HIV have an elevated risk for heart disease, even when they aren’t experiencing symptoms of HIV. The study builds on previous research has found people diagnosed with HIV have a greater risk for cardiovascular disease and a 400% high risk of a fatal heart attack. “Prior studies have shown cardiovascular disease in persons living with HIV, however not at such an early stage”, explained senior researcher Dr. Ahmed Gharib, director of the Biomedical and Metabolic Imaging Branch of National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases in Bethesda, Maryland.
