A panel of top medical experts recommended that physicians prescribe PrEP for all people at higher risk for developing HIV. PrEP, which stands for pre-exposure prophylaxis, is a medicine that can help prevent HIV. The US Preventive Services Task Force expanded its original recommendation by to encompass all versions of PrEP including a long-acting injectable called cabotegravir. Using PrEP can lower your chances of getting HIV from sex by up to 99%. The Affordable Care Act requires most insurers to follow the task force’s recommendations. Most plans will therefore cover all PrEP medications, at least before a court challenge to this rule has been resolved. until a court challenge.The Infectious Diseases Society of America and the HIV Medicine Association strongly supported the task force’s decision.
