Rare Form of Strep Throat Emerges in Children, Killing Two in the US
A rare and severe form of streptococcus infection has sickened dozens of children across the US and Europe. The infections are caused Strep A bacteria, which usually produce a more mild illness commonly referred to as strep throat. In more rare cases, these infections progress to life-threatening disease known as invasive group A strep. Invasive group A strep can develop as a complication of flu, COVID-19 or RSV. Children and elderly face the highest risk for this serious illness. This kind of infection spreads to the lungs, bloodstream and muscles, which can result in hospitalization and death. Treating the infection early is critical to preventing it from advancing to a severe stage.
