Flu Activity Reaches Highest Levels in More Than a Decade, Straining Hospitals

Flu season is off to its worst starts in 11 years, as outbreaks continue to grow in most states. New Jersey, Washington, DC, Virginia and several other states are currently in the “very high” flu activity category. The CDC has confirmed 53,000 hospitalizations and 2,900 deaths through the week of November 14. Over 6 million infections have been confirmed by health agencies. The earlier than normal flu surge coincides with an unusually high number of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) hospitalizations. RSV outbreaks have been overwhelming many pediatric units. The two viruses have strained healthcare systems across the country.
