Receiving Updated COVID-19 Booster is Particularly Important for People Older than 50

Health officials advise all Americans 5 years and older to get the updated COVID-19 booster, which protects against both the original COVID-19 strains and the newer omicron variants. However, getting the updated booster is especially critical for people over the age of 50, who are particularly vulnerable to dying or suffering severe illness from COVID-19. Currently more than 330 people, on average, die from COVID-19 every day. Approximately 70% of these deaths are people age 75 and up. Most of these people were either not up to date on COVID-19 boosters, or did not receive anti-viral treatments after they were infected. “If you are up to date with your vaccines and if you get treated if you have a breakthrough infection, your risk of dying from Covid is now close to zero”, said Dr. Ashish Jha, head of the White House COVID-19 task force. Dr. Jha urges people to get up-to-date on COVID-19 vaccinations by Halloween, so that your immunity builds up in time for Thanksgiving.
