Surge of COVID-19 Cases in Europe Suggests For Rough Winter Ahead for US
A rise in COVID-19 cases in Europe indicates the United States may see a similar uptick in COVID-19 activity this Fall/Winter. Many prior European waves have preceded a surge of cases in US. Case counts began to climb in September across the Atlantic, where the seven-day average is about 230,000 cases per day. This figure is similar to the rates recorded Europe over the summer omicron sub-variant wave. Despite the upward trend in cases, deaths and hospitalizations have not increased at the same rate. While the number of new cases and deaths are currently falling in the US, predictive models project this trend to reverse within the next several weeks. Epidemiologists warn that low booster uptake combined with extremely few safety measures will make the anticipattd winter COVID-19 more severe.
