Omicron “Stealth Variant” May Cause New US Wave, Epidemiologists Caution
An omicron sub-variant called BA.2 already accounts for 72% of COVID-19 cases in the United States. Infectious disease experts and epidemiologists have found this variant is more contagious than the the original omicron strain. However, it does not appear to cause more severe disease than its omicron predecessor. BA.2 is sometimes referred to as the stealth variant because PCR tests don’t detect it as effectively as other variants.
