Global Measles Crisis Continues to Worsen at Alarming Rate
As vaccination rates decline, the global measles crisis continues to get worse. New data show that more children fell ill from measles last year than in almost a quarter century. The number of deaths from measles in 2019 –approximately 207,500– grew by nearly 50% from 2016. The World Health Organization calculates that herd immunity against the the virus requires at least 95% of the population to be immunized. However, the global vaccination rate has been between 70% and 85% in recent years.
