An NIH-supported study estimates that the country’s 130,000-plus confirmed deaths from COVID-19 understate the true death toll. The research team calculated that “the number of excess deaths from any causes were 28% higher than the official tally of U.S. Covid-19 deaths during those months”. They also found that this spike in deaths “trailed an increase in outpatient visits from people reporting an “influenza-like illness.” COVID-19 is a multi-system disease that experts say likely led to an increase in heart attacks and strokes not initially attributed to the virus, further adding to the unofficial death total.
