The largest active measles outbreak in the US continues to expand. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed 44 new cases in South Carolina in the last few days, raising the state’s total to 920 infections since the beginning of the outbreak.
Florida’s measles outbreak has also grown in recent days as at least 20 students attending Ave Maria University have developed infections. The county has 14 other possible cases awaiting testing for confirmation.
Nationwide, the US has already logged 733 US cases across 20 states since the calendar turned to 2026. Ninety-five percent of individuals with confirmed measles infections were unvaccinated or had an unknown vaccination status. The vast majority (85%) of those infected are under the age of 19. The virus has hospitalized 23 people this year. The US will likely lose its measles elimination status this Spring due the virus’s ongoing circulation in the country.
