Updated COVID Vaccine Protected Seniors Against Severe Health Outcomes

According to a new study, the 2024-2025 booster shot provided strong protection against the hospitalization and death, particularly for seniors. The researchers examined the effectiveness of last year’s updated vaccine, which was tailored to target the JN.1 variant. JN.1 was the most widely circulating COVID variant last year. The study team found the updated vaccine was highly effective at preventing hospitalization and death in Danish people age 65 and older.

“JN.1-adapted mRNA vaccines provide high levels of sustained protection—for at least 4 months—against COVID-19 hospitalisation and death in older adults,” the researchers found. “Regularly updated mRNA vaccines targeting circulating variants remain essential for COVID-19 prevention and control.”
