Treatment Resistant “Super Bugs” Rising Globally

Treatment resistant bacteria are on the rise, a report from the World Health Organization (WHO) showed. These “super bugs” no longer respond to one or more key antibiotics, resulting in severe illness, hospitalization and sometimes death.

The WHO analysis found that 1 in 6 common bacterial infections showed resistance to these lifesaving medications in 2023. Between 2018-2023, antibiotic resistance increased by over 40% of the bacteria-medication pairings studied. Antibiotic resistance increased by 5% to 15% each year.
