China Donates $500 Million to World Health Organization Following US Withdrawal

China has pledged to contribute $500 million over 5 years to the World Health Organization (WHO). The new commitment comes as the organization seeks to close the budget shortfall caused by the United States’ abrupt departure earlier this year. China will become the top country donor to the WHO. The WHO has reduced 2026-2027 budget by over 20%, mostly as a result of the US withdrawal.

Tainted Cucumbers Sicken 26 People, Hospitalize 9

Cucumbers contaminated with salmonella bacteria have sickened at least 26 people, 9 of whom have been hospitalized. Health officials have reported 26 infection over 15 states as of May 20. The cucumbers have been recalled by Bedner Growers, Inc. based in Boynton Beach. Cases have been recorded in New York, Pennsylvania, Florida, Alabama, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

Common symptoms of salmonella include fever, diarrhea and stomach cramps. Onset of symptoms can occur between 6 hours and 6 days following exposure to the bacteria. The majority of people infected get better on their own. However, vulnerable groups, such as pregnant individuals, young kids, people with compromised immune systems, and those older than age 65, may need medical treatment.
