Flesh-Eating Bacteria Kills 5th Person in Lousianna

Another person has died from a Vibrio infection, health officials reported. A flesh-eating bacteria called Vibrio vulnificus has now killed 5 people in Louisiana. Vibrio infections are increasing in the Southeastern US.  Louisiana typically sees about 7 cases each year, but the state has already recorded 26 infections in 2025. Vibrio activity has ticked up in other states, including 10 cases in Alabama, 3 cases in Mississippi (1 death) and 13 cases in Florida (8 deaths). Vibrio infections have also been confirmed as far north as Massachussetts

Although it’s not yet known exactly how this person was infected, people can get infected by eating raw oysters or swimming in seawater with an open wound. Scientists attribute the rise in cases to warmer ocean temperatures, largely a result of climate change, as Vibrio thrives in warm waters.

Health authorities advise people to not eat raw seafood and to protect wounds from warm coastal waters.
